A significant factor contributing to its popularity is the 6-month tourist visa and the relatively low cost of living. Additionally, the Temporary Resident Visa allows individuals to stay for one year, with the option to renew it for an additional three years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Visa category<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 FMME (Forma Migratoria Multiple Electr\u00f3nica)<br \/>\n\u2022 Temporary Resident Visa*<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are the visa fees\/charges? For a temporary resident visa:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 US$53 (Interview Government fee)<br \/>\n\u2022 $5,328 MXN (Government fees for Residency Permit card, updated each year)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is there a minimum income threshold applicable for digital nomad\/remote work visa?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For a Temporary Resident Visa:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Investments or bank accounts with an average monthly balance equivalent to 5,000 days of the general minimum wage, during the last twelve months. (For 2023, it is $1,035,350 MXN) or<br \/>\n\u2022 Monthly income free of liens greater than the equivalent of 300 days of the general minimum wage. (For 2023, it is $62,100 MXN)<\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nAre digital nomad\/remote work visa holders subject to income tax?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Depends on tax residence status. Tax residency is triggered when the individual has a place of abode (home) in Mexico. In case the individual also has a home in another country, will be tax resident in Mexico the center of vital interests is located in Mexico. An individual has his\/her center of vital interests in Mexico in either of the following cases, among others:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 When more than 50% of the individual\u2019s total income received during the calendar year is derived from Mexican sources; or<br \/>\n\u2022 When the individual\u2019s main center of professional activities is located in Mexico Are digital nomad\/remote work visa holders subject to social security contributions?<br \/>\nNo, assuming no labor relationship with a Mexican entity<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is there Double Taxation Agreement (DTA) relief available in the country?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yes<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is there an income tax requirement in the country, in general?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yes<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is there a social security requirement in the country, in general?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yes<\/p>\n<p><strong>Are criminal checks required for this visa?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No Criminal Checks required<\/p>\n<p><strong>For how long is the digital nomad\/remote work visa valid?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 FMME permit: 180 days.<br \/>\n\u2022 If stay is extending over 180 days, need to apply for temporary resident visa, valid for 1 year and can be renewed annually up to 4 years)<br \/>\n\u2022 After 4 years, the individual can apply for a permanent resident visa<\/p>\n<p><strong>Notes<\/strong><br \/>\n*Visitors to Mexico can stay up to 180 days for business or other s hort-term purpose with a v isitor permit k nown as the FMM or FMME (Forma<br \/>\nmigratoria multiple, Forma migratoria multiple electronica), provided at the port of entry. Note c ertain c ountries require a v isa to enter Mexico.<br \/>\nFor over that period, a Temporary resident visa should be applied for.<\/p>\n<p><strong>work restraints\/limitations?<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 The FMME permit does not allow to work for a Mexican company<br \/>\n\u2022 Temporary resident visa: Does not allow to work for a Mexican company. The applicant must show proof that is earning income from a company outside Mexico.
